Voices encouraging Elon Musk to run for president of the United States can be heard online for months. For many Americans (and not only), the billionaire is an absolute idol, visionary and genius of our time. And this despite the numerous controversial statements he makes from time to time. Musk can certainly stand out and take care of his PR, but he will not be running in the next election. And not in any others.
Musk doesn’t want to run. As president, he couldn’t fly into space
Now Elon Musk was asked if he would like to become president during an interview with French television France 2. However, the billionaire quickly cut off the speculation. As he claims, we often think that the president has great opportunities and an extraordinary position in society. However, this is only partly true, because it is strongly limited by the American constitution. The regulations would clip Musk’s wings and he would not be able to pursue his goals in Tesla and SpaceX ex officio. – Being president, I could not, for example, send rockets to the Moon or Mars, I could not create electric vehicles – he mentioned. It can therefore be expected that Musk will not try to run for office in the near future. And in a slightly longer perspective?
Elon Musk won’t be US president anyway. Does not meet the requirements
Even if in a few years Elon Musk changes his mind about the office of president, he will not be able to run in the elections. The obstacle is again the American constitution, which imposes specific requirements on candidates. A candidate for the US president must be at least 35 years old, have lived in the United States for at least 14 years and have had American citizenship either since birth or “at the time of the adoption of this constitution” (which of course is no longer possible, because it was adopted over 230 years ago). Elon Musk meets the first two conditions. What’s more, he has also had American citizenship for over 14 years, but – and this is crucial – not from birth.
The billionaire was born in South Africa in 1971 and had only South African citizenship until adulthood. Shortly after finishing school, at the age of about 18, he emigrated to Canada, where he worked first on his cousin’s farm and then in a bank in Toronto. There he also received his second citizenship – Canadian. He left for the USA in 1992 to start his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a scholarship. Only after years of living in the United States did he get an American passport. Interestingly, they did not know about this in April this year. Dmitry Medvedev showed up, who suggested that Musk should run in the election, because he would get many votes.
