Former United States President Donald Trump justified this Monday that he had not returned secret documents he took from the White House to authorities because he was “too busy” to look for them in the boxes he stored in his mansion.

That’s what the Republican told ultra-conservative channel Fox News in the first interview he gave since last week that he was charged with 37 federal crimes for refusing to hand over documentation, including nuclear secrets.

Trump said he did not hand over the documents at the request of the National Archives Administration because he had to get his “personal items” out of the boxes first, but he was “very busy” and didn’t have time to do so.

“Before I delivered the boxes, I had to get a lot out of them. Those boxes were full of all sorts of things like golf shirts, clothes, pants, shoes. There were many things,” he said.

On June 13, Trump stated “not guilty” of federal charges filed against him. He was booked with fingerprints and photography and later appeared before federal judge Jonathan Goodman.
