Staff of the Departmental Research Delegations (DDI) of La Plata (Argentina) arrested a 48-year-old designeremployee of the National University of La Plata according to his records, accused of committing multimillion dollar virtual scams.
It is believed that the subject created a web page identical to that of a well-known Argentine bank, with a URL that differed only in one point, where unwary people entered their banking information. Then, supposedly, the now-incarcerated emptied their accounts.
The person arrested, identified as Alfredo Ignacio VC, was tracked thanks to the site’s serversin the context of an investigation conducted by agents of the DDI of La Plata, details Infobae.
In 2022, two women, one 46 and the other 67, filed complaints that prompted the investigations. They indicated that they entered the bank’s website to conduct their regular transactions, where they entered their usernames and passwords. But after a few days, they noticed that their accounts were completely empty.
Investigators determined that the fraud was committed from a bogus bank account, which was meticulously planned by the subject, who allegedly operated with his own servers.
The house of the now accused, located in the city of Villa Elisa in Buenos Aires, was raided by the prosecutor’s office. The person has been arrested and a mobile phone has been seized.five bank cards, three notebooks, four tablets, a desktop computer and a memory stick.
The web servers the defendant used to commit the crimes were located in the Santa Fe town of Rosario and he had been renting them since 2019, police sources told the Argentine portal.
However, the designer is said to have scammed several people across the country for now the scope of their operation and the exact number of casualties are unknown.
Authorities are investigating the case to find out if the subject has participated in other similar cases or to determine if he has accomplices.
