ArsTechnica: Microsoft began selling parts for self-repair of computers

The American company Microsoft began selling spare parts for self-repair of Surface computers. This is reported by the publication ArsTechnica.

Journalists drew attention to the appearance of spare parts and parts for branded PCs in the Microsoft Store online store. “Microsoft has taken the next step by listing dozens of replacement parts for Surface tablets, laptops and all-in-ones in its store,” the authors of the media noted.

Components for Surface Pro 8, 9, X, Surface 2, 3, 4, 5, Go 2, Studio and Studio 2+ computers turned out to be freely available. Users were offered many small parts, batteries, spare screens. So, the cost of an SSD drive was $82, a computer stand was $50, and a cooling system module was $50. One of the most expensive parts in the store was the front panel with a screen for a Surface 9 Pro laptop, which was priced at $ 363, or about 30 thousand rubles.

“When you purchase a repair kit, you will receive the part itself and the corresponding accompanying components, such as screws,” promised Microsoft Vice President Tim McGiggan. A top manager of the company noted that iFixit tools needed for repairs are sold separately.

Microsoft allowed self-repair of its equipment and published instructions for branded PCs at the end of 2021. Previously, a similar program was launched by Apple.
