An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit the Philippines on Thursdaythe United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported, while local authorities warned of aftershocks and possible damage.
The earthquake occurred around 10 am. (Wednesday 9 p.m. in Ecuador) with an epicenter 100 kilometers from Manila and a depth of 124 km.
Calatagan police chief Emil Mendoza said so Police station employees rushed out because of the quake, which was also felt in densely populated areas such as Manila.
“It was a bit strong. We had to run out,” he told the AFP.
There was no immediate information on casualties or damage caused, but emergency services were deployed to the area to measure the earthquake’s impact, Mendoza said.
That is what the head of the disaster management agency in Catalagan, Roland Torres, said the shaking lasted between 30 seconds and a minute.
In the capital, residents stormed into the streets when they noticed the quake.
Civil Protection Agency spokesperson Diego Mariano said “there are no major damages or casualties for now,” according to reports available so far.
Earthquakes are common in this archipelago on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity stretching from Japan to Southeast Asia.
In October 2013, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the central island of Bohol, killing about 200 people.
