Russian citizens will not be able to undergo “gender reassignment” surgeries as the Chamber of Deputies approved a new one on Wednesday law prohibiting surgical gender reassignment.

“Currently, there is a developed gender reassignment industry in Russia, which includes doctors, psychologists, a network of organizations and dishonest LGBT activists,” the delegates indicate in a letter accompanying the project.

According to the text, medical personnel should not carry out “interventions aimed at changing the sex of the personincluding the formation of the primary and secondary sexual characteristics of the opposite sex”.

These surgical procedures are only allowed in children with abnormalities in the formation of their genitalsas long as it has been previously approved by federal health agencies.

This decision is based on the Russian constitution that upholds “traditional family values”. and defines marriage only as “the union of a man and a woman.”

That’s why it was suggested “legally exclude the possibility of changing the gender in the passport and other documents”despite the fact that legal gender reassignment was allowed in Russia in 1997.
