Marvel cartoonist John Romita, who brought iconic characters like Wolverine or Spiderman’s girlfriend, mary jane, has passed away at the age of 93 in his sleep. This is how his son communicated it through a tweet this Tuesday.

His son and also comic book artist John Romita Jr., was the one who confirmed that his father had “died peacefully in his sleep”. “He is a legend in the art world and it would be an honor for me to follow in his footsteps,” she posted on social media.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Romita graduated from the Manhattan School of Industrial Art in 1947 and served in the military before beginning to work in the world of comics. He built a reputation working on titles from the companies that would become Marvel and DC: Timely Comics and National Comics.

Beginning in 1966, he worked with Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee on ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, replacing the original cartoonist, Steve Ditko, and helping to make it the company’s biggest seller. During his run he introduced Spider-Man’s love interest, Mary Jane Watson, and her adversary, the assassin Punisher, as well as the Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.
