Coronel was convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering for the Sinaloa cartel and received three years in prison. She initially served her sentence in a Virginia prison, but was transferred to a Texas prison in February 2022.

Coronel is the third wife of Joaquín Guzmán and with whom he had 11-year-old twins. She was also sentenced to 48 months probation and the payment of $1.5 million to the US state.
Coronel, a US and Mexican citizen, was arrested on February 22, 2021 at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, for alleged “complicity” in her husband’s drug trafficking.
On June 10, she pleaded guilty to all three charges brought against her: conspiracy to distribute illegal drugs in the United States, conspiracy to launder drug money, and involvement in financial transactions with a drug trafficking organization.
