Two people have died from injuries sustained in a shooting after a high school graduation ceremony in Richmond, Virginia (USA), the police announced at a press conference.

The fatalities were 18 and 36 years old. In addition, seven other people were injured in this incident that occurred Tuesday afternoon outside a theater hosting the graduation ceremony, Rick Edwards, Richmond’s interim police chief, said.

Edwards declined to provide details about whether the 18-year-old victim was one of the graduates at the ceremony or if the two victims were related, he says. the portal WCVB by ABC.

The police had two people in custody, but that was established only one of those people was a suspect in the shooting and will face charges of manslaughterincluding in the coming days, the police said.

The shooting took place at Monroe Park in Richmond after the graduation ceremony for the Huguenot schoolwhich took place at the nearby Altria Theater, said Richmond Public Schools official Matthew Stanley.

The park is located on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth Universityacross the street from the theatre.

Three off-duty officers were on ceremony security and heard gunshots outside just before 5:15 p.m. They sent out a gunshot call, and other officers working in traffic responded, Edwards said.

The uniformed officers found the seven victims with gunshot wounds and other people who suffered injuries from causes other than the shots.including one person who was hit by a car in the chaos that followed the shooting, Edwards said.

Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney vowed the attackers would be brought to justice. “Not only for the families involved, but also for the city.”

Graduations for three schools were scheduled to take place at the Altria Theater on Tuesday, according to the school system’s website.

The graduation ceremony was over and the graduates were outside taking pictures with their families when the shooting took place, Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said.
