“He really is a new man.” The Burrell family is the happiest in the world. They restored April, the member of the house who was going through a prolonged catatonic state that cut her off from everything and everyone.
April Burrell fell ill at the age of 21. He suffered, says Antena 3, from a “severe form of schizophrenia, which affects about 1% of the world’s population”. Today that nightmare is a thing of the past.
From the United States, the news travels around the planet: April “woke up” after 20 years of catatonia. This family joy represents a starting point for the future of psychiatry because, as the media points out, this case “could hold the key to a revolution in psychiatry.”

What happened to April who went catatonic
A traumatic event led to schizophrenia in April, Telemundo explains, citing The Washington Post.
In an instant, his life changed radically. The young woman who attended the University of Maryland was no longer the extroverted April everyone knew, Antena 3 describes.
The girl, Telemundo adds, “was stuck in a deep state of catatonia after a while, unable to move or blink or even remember who she was for long periods of time.”
April Burrell was catatonic, stuck in the nurse’s station – motionless, unblinking, and not knowing where or who she was.

Medical studies with April Burrell
The press reports that a multidisciplinary team has seen April. At least 70 doctors treated her.
The professionals were led by Dr. Sander Markx, who met the young woman in 2000. He studied psychiatry; Two decades later, he is in charge of the Psychiatric Precision Laboratory at Columbia University, Spanish media say.
She is to this day the sickest patient I have ever seen.

Specialists discovered that April Burrell suffered from lupus. That disease, notes the Mayo Clinic, “occurs when the body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease).”
“The inflammation caused by lupus can affect various systems and organs in the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs,” says the Mayo Clinic.
That lupus caused “the young woman’s body to attack itself with the antibodies her own cells were producing in excess. Studies indicated that this happened in his brain, specifically the areas prone to psychosis or schizophrenia.
That led them to consider a “neuropsychiatric lupus treatment”… The results amazed everyone. These same results open the door to major changes in this industry to bring improvements to the mental health of the general population.
According to Telemundo, in Britain and Germany they are taking note of the Burrell case and what the expert Markx said. The Burrell family celebrates in style. The miracle happened in 2020 and Markx confesses: “We didn’t believe this would be achieved.”
Speaking to the Burrells, April’s brother Guy said: “We thought it was a new person. He knew all of us and remembered things from when we were kids (…)”.
For this awakening from the catatonic state, he emotionally describes, “We were so happy that we could have done a parade.”
