Vladimir Putinthe president of Russia, withdrew from the treaty in February this year, suspending nuclear warhead and missile inspections. However, continues to comply with the nuclear weapons limits set out in the treaty, including no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers per country.

Since Russia’s withdrawal both countries stopped sharing semi-annual nuclear weapons data as required by the treaty. The United States will also stop informing Russia of the status or location of “treaty-listed items,” such as missiles and platforms. It also will not share telemetry information about ballistic missile test launches and revoke visas for Russian inspectors and crew members, according to a State Department announcement.

“Russian rhetoric about nuclear weapons is dangerous and irresponsible,” NATO says

The nuclear development inspections of both countries were suspended in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic. It was planned to resume them in 2022, but Russia canceled them and pulled out of the treaty.

Currently, there is still no response from Russia on whether it would be open to dialogue on a new nuclear treaty with the United States.
