Richard Barnettwho was immortalized in a photo with his feet on a desk in the Democratic congressman’s office Nancy Pelosiduring the 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

Barnett entered the House of Congress on January 6, 2021 with thousands of supporters of donald trumpwhile lawmakers ratified the Democrat’s victory Joe Biden in the presidential elections.

He was reclining in a chair with his boots propped up on a desk in the office of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives when he was photographed by the AFP. The photo went viral and enabled the police to quickly arrest him.

While in Pelosi’s office, he wrote her a harsh message. “I left him a note on his desk that read, “Nancy, Bigo was here, bitch.”, he told reporters, using his nickname.

In January, a federal court in Washington convicted Barnett, 63, of eight charges, including obstructing congressional certification of elections, entering Capitol Hill and disorderly conduct with a dangerous weapon: an electric stun device disguised as a baton.

Prosecutors had Judge Christopher Cooper order a sentence of seven years imprisonment.

That’s what they said in the criminal memorandum Barnett showed no remorse and that he had “tried to capitalize on his notoriety and criminal behavior” by “autographed photos of himself in the office of the Speaker of the House”.

Government lawyers noted that a photo of Richard Barnett with his feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk was “widely circulated” online and became one of the “best-known images of the day, symbolic of how the attackers had taken control.” Photo: AFP

The defense lawyer had asked the judge to impose a prison sentence of 12 months.

Barnett, described in court documents as a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory, defended his actions as an exercise of his constitutional right to protest.
