“It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of Clare Nowland,” New South Wales police, in Australia, announced the death of the adult over 95, who was shot a week ago with a tasers in an incident under investigation.

According to the police entity, Nowland died peacefully in hospital and the next of kin asked for privacy.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with those who were fortunate enough to know, love and be loved by Ms. Nowland during a life she led marked by family, kindness and community,” it added.

The incident between the police and Nowland is still under investigation. About a week ago, an officer felt threatened by the elderly woman carrying a walker and knife at a nursing home.

The uniformed officers responded to an emergency call at the home around 4:15 a.m. following reports of a resident with a knife.

“It’s fair to say she was armed with that knife. It was a serrated steak knife she had obtained a few hours earlier in the kitchen of the nursing home,” said Peter Cotter, deputy police commissioner.

After a few minutes of unsuccessful negotiations, the woman walked towards the door where the policeman was standing, who responded with a shot. The older adult fell to the ground and hit her head, causing a skull fracture and severe brain hemorrhage.

The officer, who was not identified, will go on trial in July and is charged with negligent grievous bodily harm, assault resulting in bodily harm and common assault. It is not known if the charges will be amended after Nowland’s death.
