A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the southeastern Loyalty Islands this Saturday (Friday night in Ecuador)an archipelago in the French territory of New Caledonia, in the South Pacific, after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake triggered a tsunami alert the day before.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors global seismic activity, recorded the quake at 12:51 am (01:51 GMT) at a depth of 35 kilometers below the sea floor. and about 300 kilometers east of the town of Vao, on the Isle of Pines – the southernmost in New Caledonia.
The Pacific Tsunami Alert Service has not activated a Tsunami alert and so far no damage has been reported.
This Friday, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the same area triggered a tsunami warning for more than three hours that hit New CaledoniaFiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand and other South Pacific countries.

New Caledonia is close to the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and from the submarine volcanoes of the Lau Basin, through which it regularly records seismic-origin shocks.
