The Chinese brand ASUS has come to shake the world of portable consoles with the presentation of its Ally device, a console whose one of the most representative features is that it is able to use the Windows operating system.
Since its announcement a few months ago, Ally has caught the attention of many video game fans. The console, which belongs to ROG (Republic of Gamers), the gaming family of the ASUS brand, has an AMD Ryzen Z1 series processor and a Full HD touchscreen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
It has been announced that it will come in two versions: one with eight cores and the other with 6. The model with the Z1 Extreme processor offers eight cores and 16 threads, with a performance of up to 8.6 TFlops at 30W. In addition, it has an RDNA 3 graphics chip with 4 GB VRAM and 12 computing units.
For its part, the model equipped with the Z1 processor offers 6 cores and 12 threads, runs at 30 W and reaches a performance of 2.8 TFlops. The GPU also features 4 GB of VRAM and 4 computing units.
Unlike rivals like Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch, ROG Ally runs on Windows 11, so you have access to a variety of online game stores and cloud services, such as the Epic Games Store, Nvidia GeForce Now, PC Xbox Game Pass and Cloud Gaming and, of course, Steam yourself.
This freedom of being able to use these platforms, which are like the Netflix of video games, makes it more attractive to users as it involves more content without having to make more purchases.
In addition, it is equipped with the Armory Crate SE app for customization. At just 608 grams, it’s about 10% lighter than its competitor, the Steam Deck.
It includes two front-firing speakers that achieve 5.1.2 channel virtual surround sound with Dolby Atmos technology.
The screen is Full HD 120HZ and 500 nits, which allows clearer vision even in bright environments.
As for storage, it has an ultra-fast 512 GB PCI Gen 4 SSD and is expandable with a MicroSD UHS-II port. In addition, it includes a fingerprint sensor for unlocking and user identification.
Finally, it has the ROG Intelligent Cooling system, which enables silent operation by reducing noise by 10 dB, and temperature control with two internal fans for the most intense work.
Two versions will be released on June 13: one for $699 with 512 GB of storage and a better processor, and another for $599.
The Asus ROG Ally can also connect to a TV via an optional external ROG XG Mobile graphics dock. Wireless controllers, such as the latest Xbox variants, are supported for remote play.
