People responsible for leaks regarding upcoming products (so-called leakers) are a huge problem for many companies, including e.g. for Apple. Not only do they spoil the surprise for customers before the premiere of new products, but they can also expose the company to formal problems or financial losses. So it’s not surprising that Apple is trying to fight such actions.
Apple caught the person responsible for the leak in an ingenious way
how Apple managed to discover the source of the recent leaks. Information about the new products was published on Twitter by an anonymous user “Analyst941”, who – as he claimed – draws knowledge from his source inside the company. In this way, he managed to provide information about the news in iOS 17, the design of the iPhone 14, and above all – the Dynamic Island, which was a complete novelty. Apple, of course, quickly learned about this user’s activities and prepared an ingenious ambush for him. Interestingly, the whole case was described by a leaker caught red-handed, who deleted his Twitter account shortly after the publication of the explanation.
Apple at some point foresaw that one of the company’s programmers might be the source of the leak and secretly prepared slides for them containing confidential information about the work in progress. However, each employee received an image modified in a way imperceptible at first glance. This modification was a kind of signature of the photo, so when the slides hit the network, Apple could easily figure out which of the programmers is behind the leak. As it turned out, one of the company’s programmers was responsible for the leak of confidential information. The Analyst941 channel was run by her brother, to whom the woman provided confidential documents and photos of products before their premiere.
The programmer was, of course, disciplinary dismissed for breaching the confidentiality agreement. It is very possible that Apple will not stop there. As described by the leaker himself, he and his sister are now afraid that the giant from Silicon Valley will use their lawyers to draw legal consequences from them. He also added that he was deleting his Twitter account “for my own safety”.
