The British want to raise AI. The local UOKiK enters into action

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the British equivalent of our Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, will prepare a report on artificial intelligence. The British government wants to understand how AI algorithms work and guide their development so that they serve citizens and the national economy.

, large language models, and generative AI that have emerged in the past five years have the potential to change how we operate and run our businesses. To ensure that AI innovation continues to develop in a direction that is beneficial to consumers, businesses and the UK economy, the government has asked regulators to reconsider the way forward in this area.

The authorities emphasize five overarching principles:

  1. security and stability;
  2. adequate transparency and explainability;
  3. justice;
  4. accountability and management;
  5. contestability and compensation;

AI under the watchful eye of the British

According to the government’s report on AI, the British equivalent of the Polish one, tasked with supporting an open and competitive market, is to look at how AI models are developing. The CMA is also to develop terms and conditions that will guide the creation and development of algorithms in the future. Therefore, the Office will examine how AI will affect the markets and in which direction the situation may evolve. They are also to identify the opportunities and threats that these scenarios will bring in terms of competition and consumer protection.

It is crucial that the potential benefits of this breakthrough technology are readily available to UK businesses and consumers and that people are protected from issues such as false or misleading information. Our goal is to help develop this new, fast-scaling technology in a way that ensures open, competitive markets and effective consumer protection

– said Sarah Cardell, the head of the office.

The CMA points out that the development will affect a range of different things, ranging from security, to privacy and the operation of markets, to human rights. Some of these issues will be dealt with by the government or other institutions. The British UOKiK will focus on the impact of AI development on competition and consumer protection. The CMA encourages you to help with the report. Until June 2, the office will accept applications and opinions regarding AI from citizens. A report will be created based on the collected data.
