Disney+ has lost millions of customers again. But he still wants to raise subscription prices

Disney+ is losing users. Only in the first quarter of this year, 4 million people left the platform. The reason is supposed to be a huge decline in interest on the Indian market. At the same time, the service plans to raise the subscription price.

The Disney+ platform was created at the end of 2019, but it came to Poland (after months of waiting) relatively recently, in June 2022. However, this did not prevent her from gaining a large group of fans. In August 2022, all Disney platforms (Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+) around the world surpassed even Netflix in terms of the number of users, leading the ranking of streaming platforms.

Disney+ has lost 4 million users

However, it seems that now Disney+ is struggling with some problems. In the first quarter of this year, the platform lost as many as 4 million users. As explained by the effect of the exodus of viewers on the Indian market. Users flocked to the site en masse after the company lost the rights to broadcast cricket matches in India. However, that’s not all, because in the USA and Canada around 300,000 people left in the same period. users who did not accept the increase in subscription prices in those markets. Earlier, in the last quarter of 2022, Disney+ lost 2.4 million customers worldwide.

Moreover, the platform was again at a loss. It ended the first quarter of this year with a loss of USD 659 million. Admittedly, this is a much smaller loss than the quarter before, but still significant. In February, Disney+ decided to make significant job cuts. As many as 7,000 people were laid off at that time. employees, which is expected to save $5.5 billion.

In this situation, the recently announced Disney+ plans are therefore puzzling to say the least. Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, that the platform will decide to increase the subscription price again. Specifically, it’s an ad-free package that costs $10.99 a month in the US. The head of Disney, however, did not admit when and by how much the price should increase. We also don’t know if the increase will also apply to the cheaper ad-supported package, which is available to users overseas for $7.99. We have to wait for this information (as well as the news whether the hikes will finally come to Poland as well).
