President Nayib Bukele, who is waging a “war” against violent gangs, assured Thursday Since the start of its mandate in 2019, El Salvador has had 365 days without homicides.

“We closed on May 10, 2023 with zero homicides nationwide. With this, there are 365 days without murders, a whole year.”assured the president on Twitter.

A source from the Presidency Communications Secretariat explained to the AFP that is “the sum of days without homicides from 2019 to date”. For a period of five years, Bukele came to power on June 1, 2019. That year, the country ended with 38 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants; the trend continued to fall and 2022 ended with 7.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Minister of Justice and Security, Gustavo Villatoro, assured that the days without murders are over “a historic milestone” and that the task begun in 2019 “wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either”. There are currently no statistics available from independent sources.

The press secretary of the Presidency assured that “El Salvador went from the most violent country in the world to the safest in Latin America” because of the “strategies” promoted by Bukele.

The coordinator of the NGO Human Rights Commission, Miguel Montenegro, assured the AFP that “if it really were totally credible news, I think it would be welcomed.” The reduction in homicides comes in the context of a “war” Bukele declared against the gangs thirteen months ago, protected by an emergency regime that saw a total of 68,294 alleged gang members arrested.

The emergency regime, which allows arrests without a warrant, was instituted on March 27, 2022 in response to a murderous gang escalation that claimed the lives of 87 people from March 25 to 27, 2022.

The emergency regime has been extended every month, criticized by various human rights organisations. The last extension expires on May 16.
