A tragic fire broke out at a mine in the Arequipa region of southern Peru on Saturday, killing 27 gold miners. Only two people managed to be rescued before the flames consumed the structures in the sinkhole.

“We only know that a short circuit caused the fire; however, I think the company is responsible for this because of a bad connection,” said the daughter of one of the victims, collects The country. Until now, the short-circuit theory is maintained.

Prosecutor Giovanni Mattos confirmed the deaths on Sunday and the bodies were recovered the same day by Peruvian National Police teams.

“We ask specialized personnel to come and see if there are more people for help or more deaths. We are coordinating with the regional government as well as ministries, such as Energy and Mining and Interior, so that there is the necessary intervention,” said Mayor James Casquino.

This is the largest mining accident in Arequipa since 2000.
