Die Zeit: Apple will not be able to sell iPhone in the EU if it limits USB-C charging
Apple has been threatened with a ban on the sale of smartphones in the European Union (EU) if the firm limits the charging speed of devices through third-party accessories. This is reported by the German newspaper Die Zeit.
A corresponding warning letter was sent to the American company by European Commissioner Thierry Breton. The document says that future Apple smartphones with USB-C should get the same charging speed – using both original and non-original accessories.
Thus, a European official reacted to rumors that Apple may limit the charging speed in the new iPhones. Previously, insiders suggested that the maximum speed will be provided only when using original cables. A special chip in the devices will allegedly be responsible for this.
Given that the law on the universal charging port in gadgets sold in the EU will not come into force until the end of 2024, Apple has time to implement and optimize the USB-C port in the iPhone. According to MacRumors journalists, Apple tablets already use USB-C and iPad does not have any chips that limit the charging speed.
At the end of April, a well-known insider under the nickname ShrimpApplePro announced that Apple will launch wired headphones with USB-C in 2023. According to the specialist, the rumors indirectly confirm that the iPhone 15 will also receive a universal connector.
