Students in schools in Broward County, one of three that make up the South Florida (U.S.) metropolitan area, will be allowed to carry only clear backpacks and purses starting next school year, a measure designed to prevent violent incidents involving firearms.

Broward County school authorities released the announcement on social networks this Saturday, stating that the regulations will go into effect on August 21, the first day of the 2023-2024 school year.

According to authorities, the purpose of this requirement is to provide greater security throughout the school district and “provide additional guarantees for students, staff and teachers.”

The official statement states that the backpacks must be transparent and that all contents of the interior must be visible.

The only exceptions allowed are small non-transparent bags for personal hygiene items, thermal food containers, school-approved sport-specific bags for athletic equipment, and cases for musical instruments, which were previously allowed.

“By enforcing this requirement, our goal is to prevent potential security vulnerabilities and promote a safe learning environment,” the statement said.

Broward County is the sixth largest public school system in the United States with over 250,000 students.

Florida was the scene of a bloody school incident on February 14, 2018 when Nikolas Cruz, who was 19 at the time, fired into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, a Broward County town, killing 17 people, between students and teachers .
