Such a solution has been used in many cities around the world for years, but so far it has not existed in any railway system in Poland. Encoding the ticket directly on the payment card allows you to forget about carrying its physical version or long-term cards with you. In the event of an inspection, the ticket is hidden on the payment card that the traveler paid at the machine. Such an opportunity will now be available to customers of the Warsaw Commuter Railway (WKD), which transports passengers to, among others, from Podkowa Leśna and Milanówek to the center of the capital.
WKD will allow you to encode the ticket on the payment card
Last week, WKD completed the installation of new mobile ticket machines, which are now deployed on every train of the line. Vending machines allow you not only to buy traditional paper tickets, but also their virtual counterparts. The latter are coded on the passenger’s payment card. The entire purchase process is very simple, just select the “Virtual ticket” option on the screen and pay for it with a payment card. The sales system then displays information that the ticket is assigned to the card that was used to purchase it.
The virtual ticket option works with a classic plastic card as well as with a smartphone and smartwatch. In the event of an inspection, it is enough to apply the same card or device to the controller’s device, and the system will automatically detect the presence of the ticket in the base. WKD ensures that the system is completely secure – “A payment card is only a transaction identifier and at no stage of control is it possible to clone it, collect money or access data contained on it” – the carrier explains on its website.
The owners of the popular “WuKaDka” point out that the new ticket machines are to be not only more convenient, but also – thanks to the reduction of the amount of paper produced – more environmentally friendly. The machines are also to consume less energy and be fully adapted to be operated by visually impaired people. For them, the possibility of buying a ticket with gestures on the screen has been prepared.
