Last year, Google blocked as many as 1.43 million malicious applications for Android smartphones that were to be published in the Play Store. The company boasts that it has managed to achieve this by working on machine learning algorithms that evaluate programs.

In recent years, fake apps have become a huge problem for Google. Cybercriminals are constantly trying to place malicious programs on the Google Play store, e.g. by impersonating popular brands. The Internet giant, out of concern for the well-being of its users, must therefore recognize and remove fake apps on time. As it turns out, Google is getting better at this task. According to the data published on Thursday on the giant’s official blog, 1.43 million applications violating the company’s rules were blocked throughout 2022. 173,000 were also removed from Google Play. “malicious” app publishers and scammers. The American giant reports that the value of fraudulent activities and abuses that have been blocked is estimated at over USD 2 billion.

The company is also raising the bar in the form of higher requirements for developers who want to allow logins with phone number, email and other Google verification methods. It was also reported that more than a million applications were able to restrict access to sensitive user data, and over the last three years, half a million apps that unjustifiably required permissions to various settings or components of the smartphone were blocked.
