The new uniform is given to mark the change of monarch. The keepers of the Tower of London wear new jackets emblazoned with the king’s initials.
Officially named the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London, the guards have worn the initials of every monarch of the time on their chests since 1570. From today, the 35 guards wear a new outfitknown as ‘blue dress’with a large king’s crown in red and the following letters written: ‘CIIIR’, in honor of Carlos.
The uniforms were made by a team of over 40 tailors at Kashket & Partners, who have created uniforms for many members of the royal family; these are paid for by the Historic Royal Palaces charity, which manages the Tower of London.

Each layer took over 30 hours to complete and weighs between 2.3kg and 3kg. They are worn with navy blue trousers, a navy blue hat and buckled shoes.
The new uniforms are part of a series of changes to mark Carlos’ reign. These included renaming The Queen’s House The King’s House and adding new royal regalia over the Jewel House and sentries throughout the site.
Who are the Yeoman Warders?
They are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. Initially, they were supposed to watch over the prisoners locked in the tower and the security of the British crown jewels, now they are the guides to the tower, as well as one of its main attractions.
To be eligible for the position of Yeoman Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, candidates must have served in the armed forces for at least 22 years and hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. In addition, have attained the rank of warrant officer or equivalent prior to being invited for interview and a rigorous selection process.
King Carlos ascended the throne immediately after the death of his mother Elizabeth II, but his official coronation will last until Saturday, May 6, 2023. Carlos he will be 74 years old at the time of the ceremony, the oldest age at which a new monarch has ever been crowned.
