More than 1,000 citizens of European Union (EU) countries were evacuated Sudan That is what the bloc’s head of diplomacy, Spain’s Josep Borrell, said on Monday after the outbreak of violence.
“It has been a complex operation, but very successful”Borrell said as he arrived for a meeting of the EU foreign minister in Luxembourg. “I cannot give exact figures, but it is certain that more than 1,000 people” have been evacuated, he added.

According to Borel, 21 diplomats from the EU representation in Khartoum were withdrawn from the country and the head of the office was transferred to another place in Sudan, outside the capital.
“I especially want to thank France for withdrawing our staff. And I want to thank the joint efforts of several countries that have withdrawn their own citizens and nationals of other countries,” he added.
An EU official told AFP he estimates there were about 1,000 in Khartoum 1,500 citizens of EU countries.
The Sudanese capital has been the scene of fierce fighting between forces of two rival warlords. The UN estimates that more than 420 people have been killed in the clashes and thousands more injured.
Borrell said he had contacted the two military commanders on the warpath by telephone on Sunday and requested an “immediate ceasefire”.
