Alejandro Toledo, former president of Peru accused in Lima of corruption and money laundering in the context of the Odebrecht case, He filed a new appeal in a federal court in Washington to try to stop his extradition to his country, one day before the deadline for surrendering to authorities.

The 77-year-old former president is under house arrest in California and must be delivered to a federal court in San Jose by 9 a.m. Friday _about 25 miles from Menlo Park, where he lives with his wife, Eliane Karp_, to begin his extradition process from the United States.

Toledo denies the allegations against him and has launched several petitions to block the extradition that Peru has been seeking since 2018 and which the US approved in February. This Thursday, he requested that the trial be stayed and requested a new hearing to discuss the appeal.

All his previous requests have been denied.

We’re ready to welcome Dr. Toledo to Peru to comply with court order”, responded Kyle Waldinger, representative of the US government.

Toledo, who governed Peru from 2001 to 2006, is a native of the United States, where he studied and worked at Stanford University. He was arrested in California in 2019 and placed under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet the following year.

Peru accuses him of receiving millions of dollars from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for public works tenders. Prosecutors are seeking 20 years and six months in prison.
