Heather Roth and Payton Washington, two young high school students in the town of Elgin, Texas, were shot by a man in a supermarket parking lot when one of them mistook a car for theirs.

The teens were joined by two other friends early Tuesday morning as they returned from regular practice for their team, Woodlands Elite Cheer Company. One of them, Heather Roth, said she got out of her boyfriend’s car and went to what she thought was her vehicle and opened the door, before realizing a man was inside.

Although Heather said she tried to apologize through the window, the 25-year-old suspect, Pedro Tello Rodríguez, pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the girls.

Roth was scraped by a bullet and was treated at the scene, police responding to emergency calls said. Her teammate, 18-year-old Payton Washington, was shot in the leg and back and taken to a hospital in critical condition.

According to a GoFundMe campaign for Payton, the student was “shot twice and seriously injured. He is stable in ICU and has a long road to recovery.”

This case ties into the recent incident where a man shot a 16-year-old student for ringing the doorbell at his home after giving the wrong address. On social networks, American citizens are calling for more controls and restrictions on the use of guns.
