30 years ago, the case of brothers Lyle and Erik Menéndez shocked public opinion. They both planned to kill their parents and they did it, in cold blood and with a total of 13 shots.

The crime was carried out in California, United States. Initially, the brothers were not listed as suspects, but a wrong move exposed their guilt and they were tried and sentenced to life in prison.

Now, 33 years after the crime, the Menéndez brothers are asking for a review of the case. Thousands of adolescents support them through social networks and the testimony of a former menudo, Roy Rosello, could be the key piece that changes the course of that sentence.

Who are the Menendez brothers?

Joseph Lyle Menendez, now 55, and Erik Galen Menendez, 52, grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. Children of María Anderson Menéndez and José Menéndez, a Cuban immigrant who managed to make his fortune in the United States and, according to El Comercio, became one of the most important businessmen in the music industry.

In 1987, the Menéndez family moved to California, María and José were already wealthy entertainment executives, residents of Beverly Hills. All the allegations at the time pointed to Lyle and Erik as troubled youths, who refused to study and just wanted to enjoy the good life and fortune.

How was the murder of José Menéndez and his wife María?

Erik and Lyle were 18 and 20 years old when they made the decision to kill their parents. The allegations ensured that the motive for the crime was to get rid of the paternal yoke and preserve the family legacy held in the mother’s name.

On the night of August 20, 1989, while Kitty and José Menéndez were watching television, their two sons surprised them and shot them. Four times to the father and nine times to the mother.

Lyle then called 911 and reported that his parents’ bodies had been found. They were ordered to leave the premises and wait for the police officers.

How were the Menendez brothers exposed?

Erik and Lyle Menendez were never considered suspects. Amidst the turmoil over the crime and investigation, both began seeking therapy to deal with grief.

But Erik could not continue with the lie and confessed the murders to his therapist and threatened him. The psychologist, in turn, entrusted the case to his assistant and lover, and once they broke up, the woman confessed to the police.

The Menendezes were put on trial. The defense alleged that the brothers were victims of sexual abuse and child abuse at the hands of their father and with the mother’s consent, but their version was rejected and they were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Now, after 33 years in prison, the brothers are seeking a review of their case, a request based on an accusation made by a former member of the Menudo group, Roy Rosello, published in People.

The “Today” show aired the allegations during an exclusive first look at Peacock’s upcoming three-part docuseries “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed.”

Rosselló alleges that José Menéndez drugged and raped him at the age of 14 during a trip to the Menéndez family home in New Jersey. Rosselló points to a photo of José during the video and says, “That’s the man who raped me. That’s the pedophile.”

Rosello’s testimony could call into question the legal process that condemned the Menéndez family more than three decades ago, thousands of defenders of the Me Too movement claim on social networks.
