For months, a growing number of Iranians have been ignoring Iran’s dress code, including a mandatory veil in public, especially since the wave of demonstrations unleashed by the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested for allegedly violating that ordinance.

“Under the applicable laws, removing the hijab is considered a crime,” Hasan Mofakhmi, chief of police security, said in the statement.

Mofakhmi also indicated that he will send warnings to companies whose employees remove their headscarves in the workplace, and that the case may be closed if repeated.

Last week, police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan stated that “people who take off the hijab will be identified using intelligent equipment”.

“People who take off their hijab in public places will first be given a warning and then they will be taken to court.” Radan warned.

According to him, vehicle owners will also receive a warning message if a passenger violates the dress code. The owner risks having his car impounded in case of a repeat violation, Radan said.
