Under US law, any person immigrating on the basis of a petition from a relative or individual must have a financial sponsor.

If you decide to sponsor the immigration of your relative or close person by filing Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, you must agree to be the financial sponsor and submit an affidavit of financial support when the actual immigration time comes.

If you do not meet the financial requirements at that time, you must file Form I-864, Affidavit of Support and Accept Responsibility, as published by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
