Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the topics of the moment as the technological tool has covered people’s daily tasks to the point of possibly replacing it.

With the launch and popularization of ChatGPT or the new Bing, it shows how useful the use of artificial intelligence can be for our lives.

Cybersecurity company Home Security Heroes has published a study on artificial intelligence and password cracking, for which it used the PassGAN (password generative adversarial network) tool on a list of more than 15 million passwords from the Rockyou database.

What should be the role of teachers in light of the GPT Chat and Artificial Intelligence outburst?

Artificial intelligence can crack the keys on my devices

Yes, AI is an ax at cracking passwords, or at least this study says: more than half can figure them out in less than a minute. This would put those with bad intentions on a silver platter.

The results are really scary about what can happen to us: 51% of commonly used passwords can be cracked in less than a minute, 65% in less than an hour, 71% in less than a day, and 81% in less than a month, as also reported by Genbeta.

Artificial intelligence could affect some 300 million jobs in the world, Goldman Sachs predicts

It also showed that almost all passwords with six characters or less were immediately cracked.

While those passwords with more than 18 characters, even if they are just numbers, on the other hand would take at least ten months with tools like PassGAN.

PassGAN is able to “autonomously learn the distribution of real passwords from real password leaks”.

If you want to test how robust your password is against PassGAN’s artificial intelligence, you can enter it on the website.

Thousands of tech experts, including Elon Musk, are calling for artificial intelligence to be stopped because it poses “major risks to humanity”

While the web claims that not everything you write is saved or shared, you’d have to be careful and use, say, a password similar to yours (but not yours) only to discover that it could theoretically be cracked within seven hours.

You should know that nothing is completely foolproof, but if your passwords are among the percentage that take the longest to decipher, the better.

How to protect my account passwords from artificial intelligence

The summary table of the study confirms the requirements that a good password must meet, but refreshing it can do no harm:

Which one is more similar? The different images of Jesus Christ’s face according to artificial intelligence

Please note that all 18-character passwords that contain both letters and numbers are safe from PassGAN and similar intelligence for now.

It’s also a good idea to change your password regularly and not use the same password for multiple accounts. That’s why you have a method to generate and remember passwords, or use a password manager to deal with so much information.

If you’re looking for extreme security in your accesses, it’s also a good idea to bet on two-factor authentication systems (if possible, ones that don’t use SMS).
