An Ecuadorian citizen was arrested in the United States last Thursday after turning himself in to Massachusetts State Police headquarters as the cause of a traffic accident that left one person dead.

Juan Leonardo P., 33, is an immigrant who allegedly entered that country illegally last August and at around 10 p.m. Monday, April 3, a 2008 Scion TC vehicle and a 2015 Honda Accord were driving down Ruta 24 when the first car changed lanes and hit the Honda, causing it to hit the concrete barrier.

The Ecuadorian migrant left the place in his vehicle. After hitting the barrier, the second vehicle was hit by a 2022 Ford Maverick which crashed from behind and set the car on fire. She was pronounced dead on the spot.

The bumper of the first vehicle remained in place.

Erpharo Gilbert, 46, traveled in the Honda vehicle. After the accident, the whereabouts of the person who caused it were unknown, Gilbert’s husband, Jean Marie Coquillon, told several US media outlets that the couple’s five-year-old son was still waiting for his mother to return home.

Similarly, he sent a message to the driver of the Scion vehicle: “They will find you wherever you are. They will find you and you will have to pay. For Coquillon, if the migrant had stopped to help the woman, she would not have died.

According to information from the portal Boston announces, the same Thursday, Brockton District Court was indicted on charges of leaving the scene causing personal injury resulting in death. In addition, the Office of Detention and Deportation Operations of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the United States (ICE) has issued a detention order for immigration to the court.

The migrant was sentenced to prison on $100,000 bail and is due to appear in court next May. Prosecutors have alleged that the Ecuadorian man was driving the vehicle and that he left the scene because he did not have regular immigration status.
