Yes, Google wants you to switch to paid YouTube. A bunch of new features

Google apparently decided to encourage people who still use the free version of YouTube to subscribe. The Premium version of the platform has now received several new features, including videos in “improved” quality and automatic downloads.

YouTube Premium, a paid version of the most popular video platform in the world, was launched in the USA in 2015, but only four years later did it reach Poland. During this time, Google encouraged subscriptions mainly by the lack of ads, viewing with the screen off (on smartphones and tablets) and the ability to download videos to the device’s memory. Now, however, the Internet giant adds a few features to convince us to pay for the version.

YouTube Premium with some news. There will be better quality videos

The changes were announced on Monday on the official website and were to be available to all subscribers of the platform and people using the trial version. The first feature is the ability to create play queues in the Android and iOS mobile apps (until now, this option was available on computers). On smartphones and tablets, you can now add interesting movies to your own list, and then play them one by one in a pre-selected order.

The second novelty is video playback in “1080p Premium” quality. Google explains that there is an increased bitrate mode (higher bitrate), i.e. containing more information in a given unit of time. Enabling this option is to improve the quality of videos displayed on smartphones and tablets. The video – as the company explains – is supposed to be “extremely sharp and clear”, and the difference will be noticed especially in the case of videos “with a lot of detail and movement”. Unfortunately, the mode will only be available for now (surprisingly) for Premium members using iPhones and iPads (it will be added to the web version in the near future). It is also a pity that a similar “enhanced” mode cannot be activated in the case of higher resolutions.

In addition, Google has also added three smaller novelties to encourage switching to the paid version of the platform. The first is watching movies together using Google Meet (and in the future also FaceTime). Interestingly, users of the Premium version can invite any person to a joint screening, regardless of whether they pay for the subscription or not.

In addition, the ability to seamlessly switch between devices while watching one material has been improved, and the process of downloading videos for offline use has been automated. YouTube Premium will now select potentially interesting materials and automatically download them (only via Wi-Fi) to the device’s memory. This is in case we forget to take care of it before a long flight or vacation in a remote area. Fortunately, this feature can be turned off if desired.
