At a health center in Spain, a doctor of Ecuadorian nationality has been verbally attacked with racist remarks.
The incident took place last Wednesday and was denounced by the Independent and Officials Union Center (CSIF). In a statement, the organization said that in the Bolaños de Calatrava health center, in the province of Ciudad Real, a man insulted and threatened the doctor.
It all started when the patient’s last name was requested and thus access to his medical history, as prescribed by the protocol. At that point, the man started behaving aggressively, referring to xenophobic remarks like “shit Ecuadorian” and “why don’t you go back to your fucking country?”
The situation continued with a nurse unsuccessfully trying to reassure him. Despite the warning that the Guardia Civil had been called, the patient did not care. “You find out, you don’t know who you’re talking to. I am not afraid of the Guardia Civil or the police, they will find out, if you had been a man you would have already discovered it,” he is said to have said.
When the uniformed officers arrived, the situation was under control and both the doctor and nurse filed a complaint.
The organization called for security personnel to be provided for each center in order to prevent attacks on medical personnel.
