Australia joined a long list of Western countries and made the announcement on Tuesday will ban the TikTok appowned by the Chinese group ByteDance, on government devices for security reasons.

Attorney General Mark Dreyfus said the decision follows advice from the country’s intelligence agencies and will be implemented “as soon as possible”.

Earlier, The United States, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and the European Commission had made similar decisions.

Cybersecurity experts warn that the application, with more than 1,000 million users, it can be used to collect data which is then shared with Chinese authorities.

TikTok criticizes that these are vetoes “based on xenophobia”but acknowledged last December that it had collected user data to spy on journalists.

Earlier this year, the Australian government also announced it was waiving hundreds of China-produced politicians’ security cameras due to security concerns.
