From the attack on the Capitol to the White House files, these are the other investigations facing Donald Trump

Donald Trump, who on Thursday became the first former president in US history to face criminal chargesfaces other state and federal investigations that threaten his 2024 White House nomination.

A congressional committee, disbanded by the Republican majority that took office this year in the lower house, investigated Trump’s role in the attack by his supporters on the Capitol on January 6, 2021as lawmakers prepared to ratify Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

At several hearings, the committee, made up mostly of Democrats, alleged that the former Republican president fired on his supporters before the attack and that he “failed to fulfill his duty as commander-in-chief” during the attack.

In his final report panel said Trump should not hold public office again and recommended that federal courts open criminal proceedings against him, especially since he called for insurrection.

This is the case that could lead to the most serious charges against Trump.

A special prosecutor, Jack Smith, is also investigating the former president’s role in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. When the investigation is over, I can decide whether or not to frame him.

Since 2021, a Georgia prosecutor has been investigating “attempts to influence election operations” in this southern state, which Biden won in 2020 with a narrow majority.

In a telephone conversation of which the recording has been made public, Trump asked a senior local official, Brad Raffensperger, to “find” nearly 12,000 votes for him.

Fani Willis, the prosecutor for Fulton County, which includes Atlanta, appointed a grand jury to determine whether there was enough evidence to indict the magnate.

He obtained testimony from people close to Trump, including his former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani.

This grand jury recommended indicting several peoplewithout revealing if the former president is one of them.

When he left the White House, Trump took boxes of documents with him, despite a 1978 law requiring all US presidents to send all their emails, letters and other working documents to the National Archives.

In January 2022, Trump brought back 15 boxes. PBut federal police estimated the former president likely had more at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Subsequently, FBI agents conducted a court-ordered search for “withholding classified documents” and “obstructing a federal investigation,” and seized about 30 more boxes.

Subsequently, an intense legal battle was opened to determine the nature of the seized documents. (classified? personal? released?) which delayed proceedings, but the case could lead to a federal charge.

Special Counsel Smith is also investigating the case.

In January, the Trump Organization in New York was ordered to pay a fine of up to $1.6 million for tax and financial fraud.. It’s a criminal case, but a civil one awaits him in a few months.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, has filed a lawsuit against Trump, his children, and the Trump Organization.

He accuses them of “deliberately” manipulating the value of the group’s assets – including golf clubs, luxury hotels and other properties – in order to get better loans from banks or lower taxes.

Claims $250 million in damages on behalf of the state, as well as banning the former president and his family members from running businesses.
