Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), blamed this Tuesday a protest by migrants over the fire that killed 39 of them at a National Institute of Migration station (INM) near the US border.

“It had to do with a protest that they started from, we suppose, they found out They would be deported and in protest at the door of the shelter they put down mats and set them on fire and they didn’t think it would cause this terrible accident,” the president said.

AMLO points out that it is migrants from Central America and some from Venezuela who were in that shelter. However, the Guatemalan Migration Institute confirmed in a statement that there are among the deceased 28 from Guatemalabut they are waiting for information from the State Department.

The Attorney General of Mexico reported that between “Identified migrants” also included 13 Hondurans, 12 Venezuelans, 12 Salvadorans, a Colombian and an Ecuadorian, without distinguishing between the dead and injured.

The detention center fire started in the area where undocumented foreigners are taken care of. The fire in this center, located near the US border, prompted the mobilization of firefighters and dozens of ambulances. Similar events have been recorded in recent years at this type of facility, albeit without the magnitude of those in Ciudad Juárez.

Dozens of migrants have been transferred to Ciudad Juárez station in recent days after local authorities removed street vendors, many of them foreigners, from the area.

In addition to expressing his sadness at what happened, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, requested a thorough investigation to clarify the reasons for the tragedy.
