Twitter code snippets leaked online. Elon Musk is looking for the culprit

Twitter has a real problem after fragments of the social platform’s code leaked to the Internet. The company has already filed the case with the court, and Github has removed the entry from its database. Elon Musk and his people are looking for the person responsible for the leak.

As last week, part of the source code on which the Twitter platform works was found online. This is according to the documents that the company filed in recent days in one of the California courts.

Twitter code snippets leaked. Musk is looking for the culprits

The code snippets were posted on GitHub (a platform for publishing software projects) by an unidentified user named “FreeSpeechEnthusiast” (Free Speech Enthusiast). One gets the impression that the name is a reference to the title “free speech absolutist”, as Elon Musk called himself before buying Twitter.

GitHub, at the request of Musk’s social network, removed the entry containing the stolen code on Friday. Twitter was also supposed to file a motion with the court to order Microsoft (the owner of GitHub) to hand over the data of the person who published the code and those users who downloaded it.

Twitter has also launched its internal investigation into the disclosure of a company secret. As the New York daily writes, the company’s management believes that the person behind the disclosure of the code most likely worked, but no longer works at Twitter. As a reminder, since Elon Musk took over the platform, 75 percent of social networkers have been fired (or left). with approx. 7.5 thousand employees.

Source code disclosure is a major concern for Twitter. Its fragments can, for example, be used by hackers to detect possible security holes or by competitors to suspect company secrets. Interestingly, the incident occurred shortly after Elon Musk promised to reveal part of the Twitter code on March 31.

Specifically, the snippets used to recommend tweets to users on Twitter’s homepage. Musk said revealing the code would be “extremely embarrassing” at first, but Twitter wanted to “win our trust”.

Revealing the secret of Twitter is not the only concern of Elon Musk. Over the weekend, the media also leaked the content of a note according to which the second richest man in the world bought the social network at the end of October 2022 for a trifle of $ 44 billion.
