The recommendation for the Polish government is dealt with by the Digitization Council, which was established by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in 2021. A special committee is to assess the risks posed by Chinese tech companies.

TikTok will be removed from the devices of state officials? Decision possible on Monday

The draft regulations, which were leaked to the media on Friday, assume the need to remove the TikTok application from devices belonging to members of the government, employees of the Sejm and Senate. This applies to both business and private equipment. The entire public administration would get rid of the application. The reasons indicated by the Council do not differ from the reasons why TikTok has already been removed from the devices of American and EU officials. These are concerns about data security, the potential risk of transferring the collected information to Chinese services and attempts to “achieve political goals”.

“The Digitization Council recommends introducing an order to remove the TikTok application from the devices of members and employees of the Sejm, Senate, Government and employees of government institutions of public administration in Poland (unless these are business phones intended only for using TikTok and other social networking sites). The Council also recommends removing the TikTok application from the private devices of the above-mentioned persons, if they have work applications installed on them at the same time. Alternatively, removing all work applications from private devices, if these people insist on the possibility of using the TikTok application on them. Friday was on Twitter.

The Council’s recommendation, as the daily explains, may also hit manufacturers such as ZTE, OnePlus, Realme and Xiaomi – they all come from China. A separate problem may concern Huawei, which supplies not only smartphones and other devices for consumers, but also telecommunications equipment.

The decisions of the Polish authorities may be influenced by last week’s interrogation of the head of TikTok. Shou Chew, testifying before the US Congress, assured that the application does not transfer any data to the Chinese authorities. He also explained that most of the board members are Americans, and the companies’ headquarters are not located in China.

According to the members of the Commission before which Chew testified, his answers were not always precise. – You remind me a lot of Mark Zuckerberg. When he came here, I said to my staff, ‘He reminds me of Fred Astaire – he dances well with words.’ And you are doing the same today – Tony Cardenas, quoted by CNN.
