Italy is on alert for the latest viral challenge that has become fashionable on the social network TikTok. In it, minors have to make a mark on their cheekbones by harming themselves, although other challenges even encourage suicide.
TikTok itself will collaborate “closely” with the Italian authorities, after the Competition and Market Guarantor Authority (AGCM) revealed that it was investigating it for this challenge.
The AGCM announced on Tuesday the opening of an investigation into TikTok Technology Limited, responsible for the platform’s relations with European consumers, for the publication of numerous videos of young people who commit self-injurious behaviorslike that of the French scar, and registered its Italian headquarters.
“We do not allow content that depicts or promotes dangerous activities and challenges, suicide, self-harm, or unhealthy eating behaviors“, it is indicated in a note sent today to the media with the official position of Tik Tok, which adds: “more than 40,000 professionals dedicated to security work to guarantee the safety of our community, and we take special care to protect especially those teenagers”.
The company claims that its “recommendation policies help ensure that content is suitable for a general audienceand that provide “access to wellness and safety resources through the app.”
The statement concludes: “We will cooperate closely with the relevant authorities to answer any questions about our policies and processes.
According to the AGCM, Tik Tok does not have “adequate systems to monitor the content published by third parties and the rules for the removal of dangerous content that encourage suicide, self-harm and incorrect information“, explained the agency on its website.
