Every March 21, the Down Syndrome Daythe chromosomal disorder that occurs when a change or extra genetic material on chromosome 21a process called Trisomy 21 and that explains the choice of date.
This day has been designated by the UN General Assembly in 2011 to raise awareness of the value and diversity that people with Down syndrome bring, in addition to emphasizing the importance of development in them autonomy, independence and a dignified and just life.

The motto for this year’s anniversary is “With us, not by us”as a way of asking that the approach to this condition be not compassionate or charitable, but that people with Down syndrome be recognized as deserving of the same human rights and opportunities as everyone else, despite having different intellectual abilities.
Efforts should also be made for people with Down syndrome to participate in multiple activities of social life so that they can exercise their right to equality, opportunity and complete happiness.

Another goal of this March 21 is Improve quality of life of people with Down syndrome, because they have more health problems because of their genetic condition. It is vital to address health and intellectual needs from an early age, with medical checkups, therapy and inclusive education.
Down syndrome day is part of the UN Agenda 2030 to protect these people from any form of abuse, outrage or discrimination.
This has emerged from a study by the ‘Misión Manuela Espejo’ foundation. In Ecuador, there are about 8,000 people with Dow syndromeNo. According to the Ministry of Health, 48.24% are women and 51.76% are men.
