Elon Musk angry. He donated $100 million to OpenAI, and now the “company” is worth $30 billion.

Elon Musk is apparently not particularly happy with the surprising success that OpenAI has achieved. As he writes on Twitter, he still wonders how this non-profit became a $30 billion enterprise.

The OpenAI organization, in which the multi-billionaire once invested, has just released the fourth “release” of its ChatGPT and is now worth tens of billions of dollars. It’s definitely not a non-profit organization anymore, and it’s not as “open” as its name suggests.

Elon Musk on OpenAI: If it’s legal, why isn’t everyone doing it?

Elon Musk has repeatedly not very kindly spoken about OpenAI and its ChatGPT program. Although Musk considers work on artificial intelligence to be the most legitimate step forward, he often repeats that the uncontrolled development of AI can pose a deadly threat to humanity.

Now, however, he took the opportunity to comment on OpenAI’s recent achievements in a caustic way. It suggests that the organization is no longer what it was meant to be.

The billionaire commented on one of the OpenAI memes on Twitter. In a tweet, he wonders how a non-profit organization turned into a multi-billion dollar company in just a few years. It also seems to imply that this is not a legal practice.

I still wonder how that is possible [organizacja] non-profit to whom I paid $100 million. somehow became [przedsiębiorstwem] for-profit with a market capitalization of $30 billion. If it’s legal, why doesn’t everyone do it?

– writes in a tweet Elon Musk.

What is Elon Musk up to?

In fact, OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit organization dedicated to research on the development of artificial intelligence. Elon Musk was one of OpenAI’s investors who jointly raised a billion dollars for its operations (Musk actually paid $100 million). One of the pillars of the organization was to be its openness, i.e. sharing its achievements on an open-source basis, hence the name. In such a model, the achievements of OpenAI were to benefit everyone, and at the same time the community could control the development of AI so that it did not get out of control.

Elon Musk has previously accused (just like many Internet users) that there is little left of the initial idea of OpenAI. From a non-profit organization, OpenAI has turned into a limited-profit organization/company (OpenAI calls itself a “capped-profit” entity). The organization also stopped sharing accurate data on its more recent developments with the community on an open-source basis, which, according to, among others, Muska – was the idea behind her activity.

On the other hand, Elon Musk himself decided to leave OpenAI in 2018. He and other investors also failed to ensure proper financing of the organization’s activities, which ended up with the need to change the business model and accepting a huge financial injection (a billion dollars) from Microsoft in 2019.

Two years later, Microsoft again invested in OpenAI (this time $2 billion), and in January this year. (the unofficially known amount is USD 10 billion). Elon Musk tweeted in February that OpenAI is already “effectively controlled” by Microsoft.
