9to5Google: Google announces end of sales of Glass headset
Google announced that on March 15 it stopped selling the augmented reality headset. This is reported by the publication 9to5Google.
The journalists recalled that Google Glass smart glasses, launched on the market in 2014, failed in sales. The company then repurposed them for use in the corporate sector. The corporation announced that support for the business version of the Google Glass Enterprise Edition headset will be discontinued on September 15, 2023. At the same time, eyewear app developers will be able to continue to release updates for their products.
The company also noted that corporate glasses owners will be able to give replacement devices and receive compensation. In addition, Google materials say that the owners of the gadget will be able to continue to solve their business problems if they do not hand over the device. At the same time, the proprietary Meet on Glass application will no longer be updated – in fact, the company “buried” the program.
9to5Google journalists noted that the corporation continues to develop the direction of wearable headsets and explore alternative reality technologies. So, in mid-May 2022, Google showed a prototype of augmented reality glasses with the function of translating voice into text.
In October 2022, former Google employee Warren Craddock named the reason for the failure of the company’s first smart glasses. According to Craddock, the corporation tried to find some task or situation in which the product would be indispensable, but did not succeed.
