Alarm on the Space Station for a cloud of garbage after the destruction of a Russian satellite

The United States has accused Russia of having acted in a “dangerous and irresponsible” manner after destroying one of its satellites with a military missile, lor that it has put the astronauts of the International Space Station at “risk” by the large amount of pieces of space debris generated.

“The Russia’s dangerous and irresponsible behavior endangers the safety of outer space and clearly shows that Russia’s statements against the use of weapons in space are false and hypocritical, “said Ned Price, spokesman for the US State Department, about this military test with an anti-satellite missile.

The official explained that the explosion of the Russian satellite has generated more than “1,500 identifiable space debris” and hundreds of thousands smaller in size, which has caused astronauts to have to take shelter in a pair of special capsules for that cloud of debris.

“This test significantly increases the risk of astronauts and cosmonauts of the International Space Station, as well as other human space activities, “Price said.

For his part, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stated that these events “clearly demonstrate” that Russia “is willing to jeopardize the long-term sustainability of space exterior “, as well as” endanger the exploration and use “of space by the rest of the nations.

In this sense, he has stated that the US Administration will work, in collaboration with its allies and partners, to respond to this “irresponsible act”, at the same time that it has invited the rest of the countries to come together to agree on a series of “norms of responsible behavior”.

Currently, there are seven astronauts on the International Space Station, Americans Mark Vande Hei, Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn and Kayla Barron; along with Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov, and German Matthias Maurer from the European Space Agency.

The military trial, not reported by Russia, comes at a time of growing tensions between Moscow and Washington over the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, where according to the Ukrainian government there are about 90,000 Russian soldiers.
