The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it fired the hypersonic missiles, made “in retaliation” about a recent raid on its territory on March 2, which it blamed on Ukrainian “saboteurs”.

“Last night the enemy launched a massive missile strike against critical infrastructure in Ukraine.. It fired 81 missiles from various bases. Ukraine has destroyed 34 cruise missiles,” Supreme Commander Valeri Zaluzhni said in a statement posted on social media.

The Ukrainian military claimed that air defenses shot down 34 of 81 missiles launched by the Russian forces.

In western Ukraine’s Lviv region, a “missile” shot into a residential area killed at least five people, the regional governor said.

The bombings come after a meeting on Wednesday between the 27 defense ministers of the European Union (EU) and their Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksii Reznikov, to negotiate a missile and munitions supply plan worth up to $2.1 billion.

Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine, the battle continues for the city of Bakhmut, which has become a symbol after months of bloody fighting.

Bakhmut could fall “in the coming days,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned.
