Duangpetch Promthep was the captain of the Wild Boars youth football team who became trapped in a cave in Thailand in 2018.
That case went around the world since 12 children were left in the cave, the entrance of which was flooded by the heavy rain that fell and prevented the minors from leaving. The group was trapped from June 23 until rescue efforts were completed on July 10, 2018..
The departure of the minors was progressive thanks to the work of groups of divers from all over the world who came to contribute to the rescue tasks. The situation was portrayed in several film productions.
Promthep died in the UK after being hospitalized, the school he attended revealed. The now 17-year-old teenager has been studying at Brooke House College football academy, near Leicester, in central England, since last year. “A dream come true,” as he himself said on Instagram in August.
This is how the children were locked in a cave in Thailand (and how were they found)
The school is “devastated by the confirmation of the death of our student Duangpetch Promthep (…) in hospital yesterday,” Principal Ian Smith said in a statement.
British police did not specify the teenager’s cause of death, but said they had received a phone call regarding the status of a student, the situation “is not being treated as suspicious”.
According to some Thai media, the boy suffered a head injury.
Promthep had managed to study in the UK after being awarded a scholarship with the help of the Zino Foundation, who expressed their sympathy.
“He had received a three-year grant from our foundation. He was our first scholarship recipient and we know he was happy there,” said soccer player Kiatisuk “Zico” Senamuang.
“We want to take his body home, our family doesn’t have much money,” said the teen’s mother, Thanaporn Duangthep.
