9to5mac: Apple may limit iPhone USB-C to third-party accessories

Apple may impose restrictions on the USB-C connector on the iPhone that will interfere with the use of third-party accessories. This is reported by the publication 9to5mac.

The portal journalists referred to a message from a Chinese insider on Weibo, who told how Apple will add a USB-C port to its future smartphones. According to the source, the company will be forced to switch to a universal connector no later than the end of 2024 due to pressure from European officials, but will introduce its own restrictions.

The material says that a special firmware will determine if the original or non-original charging cable is connected to the device and limit its operation. Apparently, Apple will be able to reduce the speed of charging or data transfer.

According to 9to5mac experts, Apple may indeed add such a restriction, but the authors do not think that third-party wires and other accessories will stop working with the iPhone. It is highly likely that Tim Cook Corporation will continue to make money on the production and certification of original USB-C cables.

At the end of October, Apple confirmed that it would equip future smartphones with a USB-C connector. According to Greg Joswiak, vice president of Apple marketing, the company will have to comply with new EU laws.
