PlayStation VR 2 helmet fails on sale

Bloomberg: Demand for the PlayStation VR 2 headset was low

The PlayStation VR 2 virtual reality helmet failed in sales. It is reported by Bloomberg.

As it became known to the agency’s sources, Sony managed to collect a relatively small number of pre-orders for a new generation VR helmet. The Japanese company has lowered sales forecasts for the PlayStation VR 2 from two million to one million units.

Later, in a conversation with journalists from GamesIndustry, Sony representatives denied the failure of the device. The company said it “sees the enthusiasm of PlayStation fans about the upcoming launch of a VR helmet.”

According to analysts interviewed by Bloomberg, the high price and compatibility of the PlayStation VR 2 have a negative impact on the popularity of the gadget. For example, consumers see competitive headsets Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro 2 as a better investment. This is because PSVR2 can only work with PS5 consoles, while other VR headsets can be used with PC. “PSVR2 will be nothing more than an expensive PS5 accessory,” said Macquarie Capital analyst Damian Tong.

Also, experts noted that the demand for alternative reality headsets is falling. At the same time, revenues in this market segment by 2027 are estimated at $7.3 billion.

Sony previously priced the PlayStation VR 2 at $550. The company said that the device will be released on February 22.
