9to5mac: Apple equips new MacBook Pro and Mac mini with slow SSDs
Newer Apple computers are equipped with slower SSD drives than previous generation models. Their shortcoming was revealed by the publication 9to5mac.
Journalists studied the new MacBook Pro based on M2 Pro processors and noticed that SSDs have a write speed of 3154 megabytes per second, and read speeds of 2973 megabytes per second. For comparison: the MacBook Pro drive on the M1 Pro produced 3950 and 4900 megabytes per second in the same tests, respectively.
In the test for writing and reading, the Mac mini SSD based on the M2 chip showed speeds of about 1500 megabytes per second. This is 30-50 percent lower than the M1 model that was released in November 2020.
The specialists explained that the decrease in speed is due to the fact that the American company switched to larger NAND memory modules. In the MacBook Pro model, four NAND modules were installed on the base of the M1 Pro, which ensured high speed. According to journalists, the same situation has developed with MacBook Air laptops based on M1 and M2 chips, as a result of which the new model turned out to be less productive than the old one.
Apple announced computers based on proprietary ARM processors – MacBook Pro and Mac mini – on January 17. New models will go on sale in Russia at the end of February at a price of 200,000 rubles.
